Bristol's Doctor Jazz, the charity jazz band, were set up in 1985 by Paul Goddard (pianist, vocalist and radiologist), Hugh Coakham (saxophonist and neurosurgeon), Chris Chivers (drummer and paramedic) and Lois Tutton (vocalist, dental surgeon and Paul's wife).
In the past thirty years the band has raised money for a variety of medical causes including MRI scanners at Bristol hospitals, brain tumour research, liver research, the magic wand appeal, research into automatic analysis of medical images and breast cancer research at the Bristol Oncology Centre. The group has been active in the raising of more than four and a half million pounds for charity.
In addition to the founding group members a large number of Bristol musicians have assisted the band including Graham Leavey (trumpets and horns) and Paul and Lois's two boys (Mark on guitar and Jeremy on piano and vocals).
The group has made several tapes, CDs and an initial single entitled Magnetic Appeal and in the past appeared on television and radio on numerous occasions.
